Monument dedicated to Partisans and The Resistance

Crespano

Located on the site where seven partisans were barbarically massacred by Nazi-Fascist troops, the monument, built in 1974, aims to commemorate the intense partisan activity that took place on the slopes of Monte Grappa during the Resistance. Situated a short distance from Giovanni Greppi‘s monumental Shrine, which commemorates the Italian and Austro-Hungarian fallen of the First World War, the monument differs from it primarily in size and then in architectural concept. It was conceived by Davanzo, with the collaboration of the sculptor Augusto Murer and the poet Andrea Zanzotto. From State Road 149, a path branches off that immediately leads to a segmented concrete walkway that descends, by means of some steps, onto a platform. Along this approach path, delimited by the earthen and stone slope upstream, and by a concrete wall downstream, concrete slabs are positioned bearing bronze verses by Quasimodo, Ungaretti, and Zanzotto himself. The sculpture, of monumental dimensions, is particularly striking, especially for visitors who are forced to walk around it on the small platform. In winter, when the snow covers the architectural structures, it stands out even more suggestively above the white mantle.
