War Epigraphs

Fietta - Crespano

The military epigraphic heritage present throughout the Grappa Massif, and therefore also in the territory of Pieve del Grappa, is a precious testimony to the Great War as attested by officers or troops: the epigraphic typologies consist of plaques, inscriptions, graffiti, keystones, commemorative epigraphs, service epigraphs, and funerary epigrams. By following the marked trails, one can come across, for example, official epigraphs such as Primo reggimento genio 26 maggio 1918 (First Engineer Regiment May 26, 1918), Brigata Umbria 53º reggimento (Umbria Brigade 53rd Regiment), Brigata Bologna 39ª e 40º reggimento di fanteria (Bologna Brigade 39th and 40th Infantry Regiment), Gruppo Lavoratori Gavotti Galleria Vittorio Emanuele III 1918 (Gavotti Workers Group Vittorio Emanuele III Gallery 1918), Secondo Reggimento Genio 186ª Compagnia (Second Engineer Regiment 186th Company), 1918 32º gruppo bombardieri (1918 32nd Bomber Group), 936ª batteria assedio costruì questa mulattiera marzo aprile 1918 (936th Siege Battery built this mule track March April 1918). But there are, also in Crespano and Paderno, more spontaneous and genuine traces no less suggestive: artigliere Masotti Gaudenzio 32º gruppo bombardieri (artilleryman Masotti Gaudenzio 32nd Bomber Group), artigliere Gaslini (artilleryman Gaslini), il combattente Antonio Failla (the combatant Antonio Failla), Bruno Capriol or graffiti like Pace (Peace) or Lirozzi Nicola di Ferrara (Lirozzi Nicola from Ferrara) or a single date like 1918. Alberto Burbello’s study, Parole dal Grappa, EFD Parlamento Europeo Group, 2010, is highly documented on this subject.
