Cima della Mandria

Paderno

Cima della Mandria can be reached on foot by parking at the Rifugio San Liberale, from which two routes of varying difficulty are possible: the first ends at Cima della Mandria and provides rest stops at Malga Vedetta and Malga Archeset (slightly off the route).
It’s approximately 6km long with an elevation gain of 920m.
From the Rifugio San Liberale, take trail 151. After crossing the bridge, take the road on the right where there’s a sign saying “Direttissima alla vedetta” (direct route to the lookout).
Once you reach Malga Vedetta (about 1200 metres above sea level), take the SP141 and after a few dozen metres, turn right towards the Cima della Mandria shrine.

The second is a circular route, with Cima della Mandria as its highest point; it’s approximately 14km long and has an elevation gain of 1,150m.
Starting from the San Liberale Refuge, take the dirt road uphill on the left and, after a couple of hairpin bends, take trail 125. Follow this until you reach a fork, where you take the road on the right for CAI trail 102.
After a while, this trail meets CAI trail 151. After a few hairpin bends, you reach Pian Dela Bala, where you take panoramic trail 152.
Continuing, ignoring all the detours, you reach Malga Vedetta, from which you can see the Cima della Mandria shrine.
For the descent, near Malga Vedetta, follow the signs for CAI trail 155 which descends through a few hairpin bends, leading directly to trail 151 which reaches the valley and then to the starting car park.

TIPS

It takes its name from the presence of a dairy farm dedicated in the early decades of the last century to a winning mare, part of a group of trotting horses bred in that area by the Rossi family of Crespano.
This meadow, which we might describe as sparse and semi-arid, is used for educational purposes at the Don Paolo Chiavacci Center due to its great biodiversity.
Besides being particularly scenic, it is also a place of great natural value, being included in the Special Protection Area.
In the middle of the clearing are a couple of buildings where, during the Christmas season, a beautiful nativity scene is set up by the Don Paolo Chiavacci Association.
