San Liberale Valley – Bus de Refos – Trincee – Sacello di San Liberale Capitello di San Liberale

Fietta

The San Liberale Valley is one of the places most recommended for a visit to truly appreciate the southern slope of the Grappa Massif. The panoramic views are extraordinary, the naturalistic importance is remarkable due to the presence of particular biotopes, and the hiking trails are among the most appreciated in the pre-Alpine arc. Added to this are the significant historical values due to the traces of the Great War, such as military roads, positions, and tunnels, now partly restored and open to visitors. Not far from the plain, accessing San Liberale means rapidly entering a true mountain scenario due to the densely wooded and severe rocky outcrops, sometimes absolutely wild, carved by the deep incision created by the Lastego torrent from its source, the suggestive and mysterious Bus de Refos. The network of trails is dense and well-marked by CAI signage. The routes can satisfy those seeking coolness and relaxation on a comfortable walk to the San Liberale Chapel. But even more demanding hikers can find great satisfaction by ascending the valley for over 1000 meters in elevation to the spectacular Meatte trail. This trail, in fact, was built during the Great War by the Italian military engineers as an immediate rear-area work to move and receive troops sheltered from enemy fire. The landscape image of the place itself is certainly attractive, traversing a series of tunnels and galleries carved by the engineers in a mountain environment. Finally, there are also two challenging ‘ferratas’ such as the direct route Carlo Guzzella and that of the Sass Brusai. In conclusion, the Valley is frequented throughout the year, and particularly from spring to late autumn ; only in the case of exceptional snowfalls can the upper part of the trails be risky.
